For the past few months, the well-known British editor and publicist Andrew Sheppard has been translating into English new poems of Aleksandr Korotko from the cycle about the war in Ukraine.
And recently, at the request of a large European publishing house, Glagoslav Publications B.V. Andrew Sheppard wrote a synopsis for Aleksandr Korotko’s collection “Bera and Cucumber”. The events, described in the collection take place in Odessa, the city of the author’s childhood and youth. A special role in the collection belongs to soft “Odesa” humor. The collection includes stories, novels, and etudes.

Synopsis
Bera and Cucumber (translated by Michael Pursglove) by Alexander Korotko is a book of short stories based on true and imagined experiences of the narrative characters. This book represents stories about little people with funny and strange names (albeit authentic ones) who have deep inner-worlds hidden from others. These worlds have their own skeletons. Each of the characters has a talent at storytelling, they express themselves in their narrations and portray the present time of Ukraine and Russia, and Israel in the past. Each character has his or her unique point of view, life visions based on Jewish traditions, and a special mixture of worldviews and cultural prejudices formed by ideologies of previous historical periods. The characters tell stories without dramatic revelations or emotional fireworks but each narrative has its special charm and charisma.
This is a book of small voices grounded in deep cultural traditions, philosophical paradigms of humanism and love, real new sincerity, and empathy. The stories present a multifaceted human condition. Even the language of the stories is special –a mixture of linguistic forms created by the author.
Peaceful conversation smoothly switches to elevated tones.

Such strange and beautiful mixtures for many decades has been a special aspect to the character of Odessa – a city of Ukraine with a very unique background.
The voice of Odessa is very distinctive in this book and represents the concept of the new Babel. However, this image has no negative connotations in Odessan discourse. This city has its specific language, spirit and mind. The importance of this book has a special significance now when Odessa is under bombardment from shelling and bombs, and its children die in these evil attacks. In this book, Odessa is a multicultural city of peace, mutual understanding and love.
Alexander Korotko created a world of ordinary people with unique selves, identities, languages. They live without fear and aggression and exemplify the ontological principles of life: to live with a sense of gratitude to God and avoid everything based in evil, greed and aggression. This book provides a special wisdom represented in characters’ stories: the importance of morality and sincerity in human lives:
After the horror I’d been through, I finally felt safe. For the first time I became aware of how defenceless humankind is in this world, but the most surprising thing was that Voldemar had somehow read my thoughts and continued aloud: “… if mankind does not have faith.”
In spite of everything the characters love and share positive energies and try to live in the atmosphere of mutual understanding. Their task is just to tell the truth as they see it in their lives, and to explore the depths of their memories. The characters are different but they all demonstrate the idea of “unity in diversity”:
Loneliness is an uninhabited island, around which there is no one for thousands of kilometres. No, of course there are people, but they exist in parallel worlds. Imagine the Eiffel Tower or the Leaning Tower of Pisa standing in your yard or growing in your garden, like the Tree of the Knowledge. It was to such an island that Solomon Volkovich came and, like Father Frost, distributed presents in the shapes of hope for new life. Masya paired his doves, adhering strictly to a rule devised over the years: to rich, prosperous grooms he offered modest, materially deprived brides, and to well-to-do young ladies, grooms with no income at all.
This book reveals our past and demonstrates a world that could be created in real life if real people followed the principles of this alternate—or not?—and more enlightened reality. Some of the stories are funny, some are melancholic, some are more lyrical and dramatic. The narratives have the verisimilitude of lives lived—it is left to us, the readers, to decide whether the stories are true or imagined. This is a book of hope and humility which lights a candle in the current darkness inflicted on Ukraine, it presents the compassionate open minds of many different still small voices articulating their fundamentally humanistic stories.

Такие странные и красивые смеси на протяжении многих десятилетий были особым аспектом характера Одессы – города Украины с очень уникальным прошлым. Голос Одессы очень характерен в этой книге и представляет концепцию нового Вавилона. Однако негативных коннотаций в одесском дискурсе этот образ не имеет. Этот город имеет свой особый язык, дух и разум. Значение этой книги приобретает особое значение сейчас, когда Одесса подвергается обстрелам и бомбежкам, а ее дети гибнут в этих злых обстрелах. В этой книге Одесса — мультикультурный город мира, взаимопонимания и любви.
Александр Коротко создал мир простых людей с уникальными личностями, индивидуальностями, языками. Они живут без страха и агрессии, и воплощают онтологические принципы жизни: жить с чувством благодарности Богу и избегать всего, что основано на зле, жадности и агрессии. Эта книга дает особую мудрость, представленную в историях персонажей: важность нравственности и искренности в жизни человека:
«После пережитого ужаса я наконец почувствовала себя в безопасности. Я впервые осознала, насколько беззащитно человечество в этом мире, но самое удивительное было то, что Вольдемар каким-то образом прочитал мои мысли и продолжил вслух: «…если человечество не имеет веры». Несмотря ни на что, герои любят и делятся позитивными энергиями и стараются жить в атмосфере взаимопонимания.
