Little prose of Alexander Korotko translated into English
The book “Bera and Cucumber”, consisting of short stories and novellas, was published a year ago, and immediately became an event in the literary fate of Alexander Korotko. The publication is dedicated to parents – the action of all things takes place in Odessa, the city of the writer’s childhood and youth. Non-standard plots with elements of intrigue and mysticism coexist with family stories, vivid lyrical digressions and warm “Odessa” humor, which A.Korotko has own, special, not reminiscent of any of the famous older brothers – Babel, for example. Despite the colorful retrospective descriptions of Odessa courtyards, everyday pictures, each thing is dominated by depth and philosophy, as well as an indispensable mystical component.

Пишу вам неразборчивым почерком
своих сомнений на краю тишины,
где время пожелтевшими листьями
спускается к морю,
единственному и беззащитному началу
моей любви к пустоте.
Я бросаю плоскую, как горизонт, гальку,
и она уже не скользит по бездушной глади,
а тонет в немом обмороке одиночества.
Вот и я, брошенный в море,
иду ко дну, нет, я парю,
и этот полёт в зелёную темноту
озаряет мою душу светом.
“Bera and Cucumber” was translated into Ukrainian by Yulia Dvoretskaya. And more recently, a translation into English has appeared. It was brilliantly performed by Stefan Komarnitsky, a writer and philosopher living in Paris.
