The famous Ukrainian poet Alexander Korotko has written a touching new fairy tale dedicated to his little granddaughter Abby. This bright and gentle story about a butterfly and a rainbow is not only for children but also for adults, as it carries the wisdom that happiness is always near us. The fairy tale reminds us: you don’t have to search for joy far away — it is enough to notice beauty in everyday things, in each day, and in your own heart.
A TALE OF A BUTTERFLY AND A RAINBOW
which I dedicated to my granddaughter Abby
There was a little butterfly in a garden with delicate blue wings. It liked to fly from flower to flower, drink the sweet nectar and bask in the sun.
But he had a dream — to see the rainbow closer.
Every time a multi-coloured arc appeared in the sky after the rain, the butterfly looked at it and thought:
— “Oh, if only I could touch those colours in the sky!”
Once, after a summer rain, a huge bright rainbow appeared. The butterfly was very happy and decided to fly to see it. He flew for a long time, but the rainbow was getting farther and farther away. His wings got tired, and the butterfly sat down on a leaf to rest.
There he met a shiny raindrop.
The drop said:
— “Why are you flying so far away? The rainbow lives not only in the sky.
It is in every flower, in every bird song, in your heart.”
The butterfly was thinking. He looked around: the flowers were shining with bright colours, the grass was sparkling like an emerald, the bees were buzzing, and the sun was shining.
And he suddenly realised that the rainbow was really there, he just needed to be able to notice it more.
From then on, the butterfly was no longer sad. He rejoiced in every day and every flower, He knew one thing — happiness does not have to be sought far away, it lives inside us.
