Alexander Korotko: «На руинах»

A popular Ukrainian newspaper published Alexander Korotko’s poem “На руинах”, written at the request of a woman whose fate shocked the author. The poem is dedicated to her and all the children of war who survived the horrors of Stalinism, war and the Holocaust.

 

На руинах


Нонне Сергеевне Строгановой
и всем детям войны


Над вечернею памятью ночь.
Ждет потопа семейство Ноаха*.
Время в ступе напрасно толочь
на руинах империи страха.

Был приказ во все горло кричать петухам,
оглашая тридцатые в серых мундирах,
и на зоне не спал по ночам вертухай,
ублажая приезжих на новых квартирах.

Беспризорная жизнь малолеток
уходила под лед, но голодные сны
находили под елкой конфеты
с горстью щедрой орехов лесных.

Полстраны в лагерях, полстраны на допросах,
как на льду, по стеклу муха счастья ползет.
Власть рабочих, крестьян и немного матросов,
и охапка дождя, вот, пожалуй, и все.
